Humane shark management with Lawrence Chlebeck from Humane World for Animals
Living Ocean’s Tom Peacock sat down with Lawrence Chlebeck from Humane World for Animals to discuss recent shark incidents along the Sydney coastline. Lawrence explains why traditional shark nets act more like culling devices than barriers, why local culls don’t work, and how simple education and awareness can help keep people and sharks safe.
A historic step for our oceans: the high seas treaty and what it means for Australia
The High Seas Treaty marks a historic step for global ocean protection, giving nations, including Australia, tools to conserve marine biodiversity beyond national waters. For Australia, it means stronger commitments to safeguard species like humpback whales and preserve critical ocean habitats, complementing the work organisations such as Living Ocean are already doing along our coasts.
A Year of Listening, Learning, and Protecting Our Ocean - Living Ocean – Key Achievements in 2025
In 2025, Living Ocean spent the year on the water and beneath the surface — tracking humpback whale migrations, listening to the ocean through underwater acoustics, and uncovering how climate change is reshaping marine life along the NSW coastline. From world-first seabird research to community events that connected people deeply to Ocean Country, this year was defined by action, collaboration, and a shared commitment to protecting our ocean.
An unforgettable trip to Eden
Join the Living Ocean team as we spent a week in Eden, NSW, studying humpback whales during their southern migration. Using the BeHayve app, we recorded detailed behaviours — from breaches and tail slaps to migration paths — contributing to a growing dataset on east coast humpbacks. Supported by volunteers and local operators, this citizen-science expedition highlights the power of community in protecting our oceans.
From Lord Howe to the South Pacific: 25 Years of Community-Powered Seabird Science
This guest blog by Dr. Jenn Lavers from Adrift Lab reflects on 25 years of seabird research on Lord Howe Island. From dawn beach surveys to late-night monitoring, Jenn shares how community support — including Living Ocean and Baillie Lodges’ Spirit of Mateship Program — has made this vital conservation science possible.
Living Ocean Deepens Support for Adrift Lab’s Groundbreaking Seabird Research
Living Ocean is proud to deepen our partnership with Adrift Lab, supporting world-leading research into the devastating impact of plastic pollution on flesh-footed shearwaters. With new funding from Capella Lodge and Baillie Lodges, this work is helping reveal the true cost of plastic on ocean life — and calling for urgent global action.
Monarchs of The Deep, Sperm Whales
In the ocean's depths, Sperm whales, the Monarchs of The Deep, battle Colossal squids and fertilize the seas through their unique role in the ecosystem. Despite past whaling, these giants now face new threats from fisheries and deep-sea mining. AI is decoding their complex language, revealing remarkable intelligence. As we uncover more about these majestic creatures, it's crucial we act to protect them from human harm.
