SHEARWATERS & PLASTIC RESEARCHSeabirds & Plastic Research: Globally, more than 1400 marine species are negatively impacted by plastic debris in our oceans, with seabirds being one of the most at-risk groups. While many impacts are visually undeniable, such as entanglements, other impacts are difficult to see with the naked eye. But, just because you can't see what's happening, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Think: CO2 and climate change. With support from Living Ocean, our research group has used new and exciting techniques to investigate these sinister effects at the cellular level, gathering quantifiable data that will ensure policy makers appreciate the true scale of the plastics issue.

SEA SHEPHERDVolunteer crew on Sea Shepherd's Ocean Warrior patrol vessel are working in partnership with the East Timor National Police (PNTL - Policia Nacionale Timor-Leste) to stop a fleet of 15 industrial fishing ships suspected of targeting sharks in East Timor and possibly the neighboring waters of Indonesia and Australia. Operation Apex Harmony - Timor Leste is one of Sea Shepherd's many campaigns to put an end to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

ALBATROSSMagnificent albatross and petrels are the most imperilled group of birds on earth. Frequently caught as bycatch in longline fishing operations, 21 of the 31 species covered by the Advisory Committee to the Agreement for the Conservation of Albatross and Petrels are at risk of extinction. Four species are critically endangered, five endangered, 12 vulnerable, and eight near threatened.HSI works with governments and authorities to obtain results via legal change as well as communities.

HAMMERHEAD SHARKSHammerheads are endangered due to the shark fin trade, with fins from almost 370 tonnes of hammerheads allowed to be exported from Australia every year, fuelling the demand for shark fin soup. Australia’s shark control programs are also threatening the species with almost 15,000 hammerheads having been killed in Queensland’s Shark Control Program since its inception, and over 5,000 killed in the NSW shark meshing program. HSI works with governments and authorities to obtain results via legal change as well as communities.

OCEAN PLASTICSIn Maori and Polynesian mythology, Tangaroa is the god of the ocean. Tangaroa made laws to protect the ocean and its sea creatures "Tiaki mai i ahau, maku ano koe e tiaki"... If you look after me, then I will look after you..." When, after a week-long clean-up event, the whales and dolphins come close to our beach and slap their flippers, we sometimes wonder if it is Tangaroa saying "thank you".

SEA TURTLESTurtles face many threats from changes in climate, loss of nesting habitat, increased ocean pollution, and deliberate and accidental deaths caused by fishing activities around the world. These factors combined are pushing many of the world's populations of sea turtles toward extinction. Supporting research into turtle health and ecology throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
