Antarctic Research Project Launch

  • Avalon Bowlo 4 Bowling Green Lane Avalon Beach, NSW, 2107 Australia (map)

Living Ocean invites the community to a launch event for their Antarctic Research Project, in association with expedition partner Southern Sea Ventures, studying the rewilding of the Southern Ocean.

At the height of Antarctic whale activity during the 2023/24 whale migration, Living Ocean is planning a unique citizen science Antarctic project on board the MV Polar Pioneer voyage around the Antarctic Peninsular.

The expedition launch will be a community event, held at 6.30pm on Thursday 20th April 2023 at the Avalon Bowlo, Bowling Green Lane, Avalon Beach. Attendees will hear from: Antarctic Scientist and Polar Guide, Dr Ian Goodwin, who has researched climatology, glaciology and oceanography in Antarctica for 40 years; and Toby Story from expedition partner Southern Sea Ventures, the pioneers of polar sea kayaking.

As founding members of the Living Ocean Antarctic Research Project, community members who join as expeditioners will be treated to an intimate whale experience onboard the Polar Pioneer by studying both sides of the Antarctic peninsula to journey through the past, present, and future of great whales in Antarctic waters.

However, this is not a simple cruise. As a centre for marine studies, Living Ocean will be employing animal behaviour, microplastics, and climate research protocols during the expedition, with all expeditioners having the opportunity to be directly involved as citizen scientists.

Come join the team as we provide all the details about this exciting opportunity to participate in an Antarctic voyage.

Those attending the event will be granted special access to a 10% discount on expedition berth prices.
